Mission

Simavi stimulates and supports programmes at improving the health of the poorest populations of rural Africa and Asia, without regard to race, religion or political creed.

Simavi supports initiatives in the field of primary healthcare, with particular concern for water and sanitation. Other cross-cutting issues of concern include HIV/AIDS, gender, capacity building and, to a limited extent, eye-care.  All endeavours in Simavi´s specialized areas are set against the backdrop of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Simavi works toward an integrated approach that strengthens community based interventions through financing of local efforts as well as by enhancing the capacity of local actors, in particular non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Simavi builds international and local networks to facilitate exchange and collaboration that in turn contribute to increasing knowledge around its themes. To this end, Simavi finances supportive activities of its partners in the South.

Simavi views itself as a mediator connecting communities in the South and North. In this role it focuses particularly on increasing public insight into development themes that are relevant to Simavi.

Simavi aims to create understanding and concern in Dutch society on issues faced by local populations in developing countries. To mobilize and maintain Dutch public concern regarding development issues, Simavi engages in well-directed public awareness activities that help to raise funds to finance sustainable projects.

Simavi mobilises people in the Netherlands to assist in fundraising activities for its projects. On a limited scale this entails networking and exchanging expertise, based on the needs of partners in the South.
